Until as late as 1460, when this illuminated copy was made, Europeans were still using a map drawn by Ptolemy, a Greek geographer of the second century A.D. Scholars had known the world was round for centuries before Columbus' voyage, as this map shows, but southern Africa, the Pacific, and the Americas were unknown.
